For Channel 4's Paralympic Homecoming show in 2024, we created large-screen visuals charting the remarkable historical and cultural journey of the Paralympic movement, from its origins to the global celebration it is today.
The story begins with the movement's roots at Stoke Mandeville in 1948, where Dr Ludwig Guttmann organised a sporting competition for injured veterans, and follows its growth into the first Paralympic Games in Rome in 1960 and beyond. Rather than presenting this as a straightforward timeline, we set out to tell the story in a way that felt immersive, emotional and true to each era.
To achieve this, we built the historical narrative using a mix of visual technologies from across the decades. Each chapter of the story took on the look and texture of its time, moving through aged film, early broadcast television, analogue video and into the crisp, vibrant digital imagery of the present day. This evolving visual language allowed audiences to feel the passage of time, while highlighting key milestones and moments that shaped the Paralympic movement and changed perceptions of disability sport.
The visuals were designed to support and elevate a series of speeches, poems and performances on stage, including work from dance group Propel. Working closely with the live elements, the screen content provided context, atmosphere and emotional weight, framing each performance within the wider story being told and allowing the words and movement to take centre stage.
Scale was key throughout. Designed for large-format screens, the visuals needed to hold their own in the arena while translating clearly to viewers at home through the broadcast cameras.
The result was a powerful, reflective centrepiece to the evening, celebrating how far the Paralympics has come and honouring the athletes and pioneers who made that journey possible.
